Stream is Microsoft's video hosting platform that allows you to easily create, share, and interact with video content. Similar to YouTube, videos are typically created outside of Microsoft Stream and then uploaded to the video hosting platform for sharing purposes.
This article will demonstrate how you can upload an existing video file and then share the video with your professor or peers.
Step 1: Accessing Stream
Stream is part of the Office 365 suite available to all KU faculty, staff, and students. To access Stream, navigate to www.office.com and login with your KU email address and password.
Note: You will initially enter your email address on Microsoft's login screen. Once you've entered your full email address, you will be redirected to the KU login screen.
Select Stream from the list of available apps. If Stream does not appear in the main list, click "All apps" to view the full list.
Step 2: Uploading Your Video
In Stream, click "+ Create" in the navigation bar at the top of the page and choose "Upload video."
Drag the video file that you want to upload into the upload area or click "Browse" to locate the file on your computer.
The video will begin to upload. You will be able to adjust the "Details," "Permissions," and "Options" while the upload processes.
Step 3: Customize Your Video Settings
- Provide a name for your video recording.
- Add a description, if desired, about the video.
- You can adjust the thumbnail for the video or upload your own.
By default videos uploaded to Stream will be private and only accessible if shared directly with an individual, group, or channel.
"Allow everyone in your company to view this video" is NOT recommended.
Sharing with Individuals
With the "Share with" menu set to "People," search for the individual you want to share your video with by typing the first part of their email address and clicking the magnifying glass icon to search. Select the user from the list of suggested results to add them to the video.
Sharing with Groups
With the "Share with" menu set to "Groups," search for the name of your group by typing the first part of the group name in the search field. Click the magnifying glass icon to search. Select the group from the list of suggested results to add it to the video.
If you are not sure of your group name, please check with your instructor.
Sharing with Channels
With the "Share with" menu set to "Channels," search for the name of your channel by typing the first part of the channel name in the search field. Click the magnifying glass icon to search. Select the channel from the list of suggested results to add it to the video. If you are adding your video to a group channel, the group will be applied as well.
If you are not sure of your channel name, please check with your instructor.
Determine if viewers should have the ability to comment on your video. This resembles YouTube commenting. Please check with your instructor if commenting is required or recommended for your assignment.
It is recommended that you use the option to generate a caption file. This will allow visually impaired individuals equal access to your video.
Step 4: Publish and Share Your Video
After configuring the settings, be sure to "Publish" your video. Click the "Share" button to get the link to your video.
